Making of a DFIRM Map

The new floodplain maps will still be available as paper FIRMs but they will also be available as Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps, or DFIRMs. While the paper maps will still be the official regulatory floodplain maps, you will be able to get a CD that contains all the information from the FIRMs. This information plus additional information will be easily viewable on your own computer. A DFIRM is a digital version of the floodplain maps that contains additional information not normally available on the paper map. Some of the additional information on the DFIRM will include a map of the different land uses in Harris County, the two foot contour map of Harris County and other engineering products and information generated during the process of creating the FIRMs. For more information on DFIRMs please go to FEMA's Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map Home website.
